Gwynne Shotwell is the operator behind SpaceX
She joined when the company had never flown a rocket. In 2026 she helped take it public.
When Gwynne Shotwell joined SpaceX in 2002, the company had not yet flown a rocket. She was one of its first employees, hired to run business development, which meant selling launches on vehicles that did not exist yet.
She has been president and chief operating officer since 2008. While Elon Musk leads the company as CEO and chief engineer, Shotwell runs much of its day-to-day operation: customers, contracts, launch cadence and the teams behind them.
The engineer who sells
Shotwell studied mechanical engineering and applied mathematics at Northwestern University. She spent about a decade at The Aerospace Corporation before moving into the commercial space industry.
At SpaceX, her work turned early contracts into a business. NASA awarded SpaceX a cargo resupply contract for the International Space Station in 2008, and later a contract to fly astronauts. The company’s first crewed flight to the station launched in May 2020. Along the way, Falcon 9 boosters began landing and flying again, which changed the economics of getting to orbit.
The public company
In June 2026, SpaceX listed its shares on Nasdaq. Reports put the raise at about $75 billion and the company’s valuation near $1.75 trillion, making it the largest IPO on record. Shotwell was at the exchange in New York for the opening, while Musk joined by video from Starbase in Texas.
What to watch
Public shareholders bring quarterly scrutiny to a company used to long timelines. Starship development, Starlink’s growth and the pace of launches will now be judged in earnings calls as well as on the launch pad.
