Arthur Mensch is building Europe’s answer in AI
Mistral AI’s co-founder bet on efficient, open-weight models, and on European independence in AI.
In 2023, three French researchers left two of the largest AI labs in the world to start their own. Arthur Mensch, who had worked on large language models at Google DeepMind, founded Mistral AI in Paris with Guillaume Lample and Timothée Lacroix, both from Meta.
Mensch, a graduate of École polytechnique, was among the authors of DeepMind’s influential research on how to train language models efficiently. That focus on doing more with less became Mistral’s identity.
Open weights, fast
Mistral released capable models with open weights, meaning developers could download and run them on their own hardware, alongside commercial models and its own assistant, Le Chat. The approach appealed to companies and governments that want control over where their data goes.
Scale and sovereignty
In September 2025, Mistral raised €1.7 billion in a round led by the chipmaking-equipment maker ASML, at a valuation of €11.7 billion. At Davos in January 2026, Mensch said Mistral’s revenue should pass €1 billion this year, and that it would spend roughly as much on chips and infrastructure.
What to watch
Mistral competes with American labs that spend far more on computing. Its bet is that European customers will value a strong local option, and that efficient models can close much of the gap.
