# Andy Jassy is making Amazon’s biggest bet since AWS

Andy Jassy joined Amazon in 1997, straight out of business school. A few years later, as technical adviser to Jeff Bezos, he helped shape the idea of selling Amazon’s computing infrastructure to other companies. Amazon Web Services launched in 2006, and Jassy ran it for most of the next 15 years.

AWS became the market leader in cloud computing and Amazon’s main source of profit. In July 2021, Jassy succeeded Bezos as Amazon’s chief executive.

## A tighter Amazon

His early years as CEO focused on cost. Amazon cut tens of thousands of jobs in 2022 and 2023, reorganized its logistics network and later required corporate staff to return to the office five days a week.

## The AI build-out

In his April 2026 letter to shareholders, Jassy made the case for spending about $200 billion on capital projects in 2026, most of it on AI infrastructure. “We’re not investing approximately $200 billion in capex in 2026 on a hunch,” he wrote, pointing to customer commitments behind the spending.

According to the letter, AWS revenue grew 20% in 2025 to about $129 billion, its AI business reached an annual run rate of about $15 billion, and Amazon’s custom chips generate more than $20 billion in annualized revenue.

## What to watch

The return on that spending is the question for Amazon’s investors. Jassy is also launching Amazon Leo, a satellite internet service, and expanding Zoox robotaxis, two long bets outside the cloud.
